Photo Essays

This week you will create a photo essay. Share your topic with us:
  • Why did you choose this topic?
  • What do you think will make your story original and engaging?
  • What is going to be the most difficult aspect of this project?
  • Based on this weeks reading assignment, how do you plan to archive this project?
  • What kind of questions or concerns do you have?
Also discuss the photo essays you've reviewed. Choose one of the photo essays from the lecture, and discuss the following questions:
  • What themes in style, color, exposure, perspective (or other themes) can you find in the essay?
  • Do you think the essay effectively tells a story, or are there too many photos? Too few photos? Explain your rationale.
  • What other observations do you have?
  • If you have a photo essay you would like to share, please do so (after you answer the first three questions).

  1. Photo Essay
The topic I chose for my photo essay is Spring Life. When I say spring life I am referring to things and creatures that exhibit being alive and also things that seem to represent life and or emanate life from them. I decided to choose this topic because there is so much life going on daily that one doesn’t stop to look and or appreciate it. I believe the thing that will make my story original and engaging is the images I plan to take that show how life exists in our community whether it be common or unusual. The thing that might be the most difficult aspect of this project is going to be how to represent life in images.

The themes of style, color, exposure, perspective that I saw that were used in the photo essays reviewed in class were the use of dark and light tones for lighting, the use of perspective lines in the photos and in the props of each image that showcased a depth of field, and the style used was a form of documentary and a scrapbook setting. For the first essay I believe the photography should have used more images since he had many people who could have done many scenes to convey his theme of ninjas and for the second essay I believe the photographer used just the right number of images to convey his story of an Irish Blessing. One observation I noticed was how all the people in the shoot were ready to help out Jarvis the photographer in anything he needed for the pictures.

  2. im torn between telling a story about myself or someone else. i cant say who this someone else is based on i want the emotion that i am trying to convey to be pure.
let me know if that makes sense.
i feel like a variety of light and angles will make the story more interesting. i want my story to have a little suspense to it over all. that will be the biggest challenge to me.
as far as archiving my project, i can see myself using my external hard drive for the finished product but only using a couple of thumb drives to store and categorize my picture as i go along.
i felt like the photo essay we review had unity and a wide scale of technique.

    1. looks like it will be interesting to try and see how you are going to communicate your essay with photos and images about yourself and or someone else without using words.

  4. I just thought of an engaging title . And touched on the sensitive mater of homelessness/ drug use and how they go hand in hand. Seems as if the mayor dont care. And how it effects me, emotionally and mentally : having just been in that situation years ago.

    1. I think your topic sounds very personal and gripping. I wonder if you might do your photos in grayscale to show how bleak the images in your photos are as a point of contrast?

    2. the topics sounds interesting, it will be a good opportunity to show us how the way people are living in our streets and no one is there to help them out.

  5. I would like my photo essay to focus on signage in the city, restaurant or business,in particular. I think it will be something that hasn't really been done before or too often. I do not see any challenges for this subject because the cloud cover should enable me to get great pictures with little or no glare.

    1. Upon further review of the assignment deliverables, I decided to go with the topic: "Shapes in the Park". Millennium Park has plenty of amazing shapes and the surrounding buildings that overlook the park have great aesthetic value and shape as well. There are lines, curves, rectangles in a lot of the shots I took today.

    1. I am sure you will get many great shots from comic book fans tomorrow. Free Comic Book Day is a hit every year. Silly question, but do you see any obstacles in getting your photos on Saturday? Also, what will be your compositional focus? How many photos will you take before you purge them to get your minimum of 12?

  7. There's a story to everything and everyone, written or visual. My topic is activism. After the past seven years, I have learned countless people are easily provoked with different emotions concerning the act of standing up for justice. Some are afraid, others brave, a few possibly confused by such acts. The photographs I gathered during the Global Climate Convergence Earth Day rally sparked the interests of every participant. There were colorful posters and delightful phrases ranging from sunny and passive to harsh and straightforward. This topic definitely would raise endless questions to all who are not aware of the power of community and nonviolent activism.

Color, exposure, unity, emotion and technique are my primary sources for my topic.
