Week 9 Discussion

Photography Tools and Techniques

Over the past 9 weeks you have explored the tools and techniques of photography. In this final discussion give us the top three techniques you used to capture solid compositions. Then tell us three things that you found the most difficult. Finally share with us how you think these skills will benefit you in your career.

  1. Three tools and techniques that I have learned in this class that I have used to capture solid compositions are the use of the shutter speed, the aperture, and the ISO sensitivity settings. Three things I found most difficult would have to be how to capture a scene when there is a lot of movement happening around my target image.
Another thing I had difficulties with were how to convey a message with images and not words. And another thing I had difficult with was how to format the images so they would be under one megabyte for transfer.

    1. even if you don't enter into the photography field what you've learned from using the camera will be vital in animation, graphic and sequential art

    2. Absolutely, I agree with what you said. Basically any industry is taking little aspects from other industries to better their work so it can appeal to many people so it never hurts to know what photography is all about.

    3. I was never a photographer, but I like to take pictures of things that interest me and use them for reference when I sketch. This course has given me insight in how to present a professional portfolio for a client. I still need to develop my technical skills and I believe I will get there with practice and diligence.

  2. I've used framing, multiple light sources and many lighting situations from low light to intense high light each needing a different adjustment to compensate for too much or lack of light. Even though I won't be using a camera directly it has given me a new view of perspective, angles and lighting

    1. That good that you use framing and light sources for your images but was there anything you had trouble with while you were shooting images like white balance, exposure or depth of field. Framing was also a technique I used after taking this class but before I took this class I just was shooting with out paying attention to all the features a camera has to produce a good image. Overall this class has enlighten me to all the aspects one should consider when taking a picture on a camera.

  3. I believe the three things that helped me the most in getting great composition in my shots are: the rule of thirds, framing, and finding the focal point of what I am shooting.

I had the most challenges when it came to: getting candid shots, getting blur free photographs, and not having regular access to camera to complete assignments.

  4. over the past few weeks i experimented a lot withe depth of field and focal length. i didnt concentrate as much as i wanted to on high shutter speed. i know that i can improve my craft by working more on my focusing.
i see no reason why i would be able to build a decent portfolio if i consistently work on it.

    1. I agree practice make perfect and anyway you can also use the images you have taken for other to view and get inspired from.

    2. that's exactly what i plan on doing. even retaking some of the shots that i felt were worth actually retaking. i can use those shots to enforce the integrity of my portfolio.

    3. It took me a while to get used to the settings on the camera (I am still learning a lot), but practice is the only way we can get better.

    4. you can practice depth of field using a child's telescope. it will simulate the various focal points.

  5. The three things I've learned from this class are the following: shooting with different light sources, utilizing all of the settings on the camera and the power of depth of field in a photograph.

The particular challenges I've had in this class: the rule of thirds, taking unfocused images and framing. I plan to continue honing my photography skills so I can be aware of my subject and/or overall composition. Also, I am proud to learn to adjust my ISO, aperture/F-stop and white balance to compensate for the images I'm shooting. This class overall has given me more confidence to see the bigger picture when one is behind the camera. Plus, photo essays are beneficial for professional and amateur photographers to understand the entire story without words.

  6. I think the best techniques I learned for shooting pictures are the use of DOF, the use of shutter speed, and the use of exposure. Using a combination of these techniques I can make even the most mundane object seem other worldly. The biggest challenge I had was getting used to the manual mode. Took me a few weeks but the pay off was stupendous.
